Africology Skin Care Products

Africology skin care products have been developed to revitalize the skin, to prevent damage done to the skin by free-radicals, stress and the harsh climate.

Africology makes use of the healing essences of some of South Africa’s indigenous plants. The active ingredients in our skin care products are valuable in the repair process and assist with the restoration of damaged skin tissue. You can never be too young to start this preventative process.

While our physical bodies will eventually age, we can slow the process down in a powerful way. Derma cosmetics focus on the dermis, protecting it from water loss and damage from free radicals. The use of energy in daily practice helps restore damage to each and every cell in our bodies, working from the inside out.

A positive inner world creates an ageless being. With every thought, sensation and feeling you have, your nervous system undergoes subtle shifts in physiology, generating chemical messages that regulate your body. These bio-chemical communicators continuously mould the molecules that comprise your cells, tissues and organs.

Africology – Kind to you, kind to the world: 100% Natural Essential Oils, Natural Plant Extracts, Eco Friendly.

Eco Friendly Spa

Our promise to you!

Here at Africology we have developed two logos that signify our promise of purity and enviromental practice to the consumer.
Wherever you see our logo you can be assured of the following:

Free from harmful chemicals commonly used in skincare and cosmetics; see “safety in skincare

We do not use ingredients derived from animals, nor do we endorse or practice animal testing

We use 100% pure natural Essential oils to fragrance our products

We use packaging that is enviromentally friendly and recylable

Where possible we source organic ingredients

All of our business helps to promote and raise awareness of enviromental issues

We are constantly striving to uplift and develop those less fortunate

It is important that as an ethical brand, spa or person, that you put into practice actions that respect our environment and help to preserve our planet’s resources. You have taken the first step by choosing a brand that is ethically orientated and chemical free, so well done! And here are a few more tips on how you can promote this pattern of ethical awareness within the entire spectrum of your work place and life.

 Water

Water is one of the most precious resources we have and probably one of the most taken for granted, so here are some great ideas on how to preserve this vital liquid.

  1. Between use, always turn off your tap; do not leave it running while you go to fetch your bowl to fill it with water. Don’t run the shower before a client gets in — explain how you are conserving water as part of the spa’s ethical policy. See it as an opportunity to impress your client with your attitude towards social responsibility. The public are becoming increasingly aware and appreciate the need for this kind of commitment and approve of it when they see it. Put a note by your basins asking clients to also consider conserving water
  2. When washing linen always fill the machine to use a full cycle instead of doing lots of small washes — this also helps to cut costs by reducing the water bill! Try and use a front loader machine instead of a top loader. On average a front loader can use up to 10 gallons of water per full load vs a massive 40 gallons per full load for a top-loading washer
  3. Black, thick fluffy towels use less water to clean and you will not have to use chemicals to remove stains as one would have to do if using white towels! What’s more they have fantastic visual impact with our Africology decor and merchandising as well! See the image above on how we propose that you decorate your Africology spa
  4. Use heated mittens in your facials instead of having to use lots of bowls of water. Rather use one bowl of water instead of constantly running to the tap
  5. Another good water saving tip is to use a frying pan for all facial mittens. No more running water to warm a mitten, or water to use in the actual facial. All warmed up in the frying pan. Another good energy saver!
  6. When cleaning floors or the spa area do not fill your bucket with water. Only take what you need;  about a 10th of a bucket
  7. Recycle water where possible. If you are using eco-friendly products and cleaning materials you can set up a system to capture your used hydro bath or shower water to water your spa garden
  8. Catch water by placing a tank in a water capture area, for example let it run off your roof. This can then be filtered and used in your spa. Of course this also brings an economic benefit
  9. Encourage therapists to carry a water bottle and refill it instead of buying new bottles every time. Get a water cooler for refills in the spa instead of supplying guests with a plastic bottle each time. This will cut back on plastic wastage. Also provide guests with a glass rather than disposable cups for your water dispenser — once again limiting wastage. Glass also does not carry the risk of xeno-estrogens. Why not brand some glass water bottles for your spa? These can be given to clients or you can encourage them to purchase them. This is great and effective marketing for you –and your clients will be impressed by how you are preventing waste build-up

Chemicals

Chemicals can damage us, Mother Earth and the plants we rely on. Always be aware of what you are putting down the drain, especially if you have a septic tank or reedbed system.

  1. Use only eco-friendly chemicals for cleaning purposes — they can be more expensive but you can offset this against your treatment costings. Enchantrix is a good example of a local, green product
  2. Be wary of products that claim to be natural- always read the labels, and see our No-No’s list
  3. If you serve food or beverages in your spa, try to go organic
  4. Use an eco-friendly skincare brand, so that you can recycle your water knowing it does not contain chemicals which will damage plants and Mother Nature
  5. Clean windows with newspaper, water and a little vinegar for stubborn stains. It works better than any other window cleaner. It appears that some brands of white vinegar may be derived from petroleum (crude oil) and fossil fuel products. Synthetic ethyl alcohol can be created from the liquefaction of coal or the hydration of ethylene. Ethylene is produced in the petrochemical industry. It’s important to check the label or, better still, with the manufacturer to ensure that the brand you buy does not originate from these sources
  6. Pour boiling white vinegar down a clogged drain to remove any obstruction instead of a commerical drain cleaner
  7. Soak items covered in limescale in vinegar regularly instead of applying harsh chemicals. If you regularly soak such items, it is easier to remove build-up.
  8. Eucalyptus oil is a great multi-purpose product to use around the spa or home. Here are some suggestions:
  • Add 1-2 teaspoonsful of eucalyptus oil to your load of washing for a fresh scent as well as the important benefit of its anti-microbial action.
  • Use the oil, undiluted, to help remove paint, grease and ink from clothes.
  • If you have a room freshener, or hanging car air-freshener that is almost dead, reinvigorate them by adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil.
  • Half a teaspoon mixed with half a litre of water makes for a good bug repellant for plants.
  • Use it as a stainless steel cleaner.
  • To use as a room air-freshener, mix a quarter of a teaspooon or 15 drops of eucalyptus oil with a half teaspoon of vodka, place in an atomizer/spray bottle and add two cups of water. This should be quite subtle, so you may need to add more.
  • Make a spray and wipe with water, eucalyptus oil and some washing up liquid. The idea comes from a hospital cleaner and works well. Proportions do not need to be exact. Fill the bottle mostly with water – add a generous splash of dishwashing liquid and then a capful or thereabouts of 100% eucalyptus. Shake gently to mix. Works well on all surfaces

Home Care

Africology products have been developed so naturally that it grants you the freedom to custom-blend and change your daily routine to accomodate your changing body and skin. Throughout a single month our bodies go through various processes that effect appearance, oil secretions, redness and hydration levels and many more functions of the skin. We have discovered and learnt that if we treat the skin on a dalily/weekly basis we are able to give the skin what it requires, thus assisting the body’s natural processes and ensuring great results.

With this in mind we have developed our range to create a simple-to-use homecare routine that teaches the consumer to understand what their skin needs, and how to benefit from this.
We have two simple Cleansing lines that both work to clean the skin and remove make up. One is for a more

We have a beautiful, effective exfoliator suitable for all skin types that is gentle enough for even the most sensitive of skins, so as not to scratch or damage the delicate acid mantle.
From here you can select your serums, choosing the formulations that adress your concerns and enable you to balance and restore the skin back its natural beauty. We call this “Africology Radiance”.

Finally, we look at protecting and renewing the skin with our moisturiser and night cream, always protecting against sun damage during the day and nourishing the skin at night, encouraging cell renewal and hydration.
Our body range gently cleanses the skin and hair with no harsh chemicals, full of wonderful, natural antioxidants that combat damage from free radicals. We use 100% natural plant oils and shea to maintain moisture levels, and essential oils to treat skin conditions.

We recommend that skin is cleansed morning and evening, especially ensuring that traces of makeup are removed. Cleansing is followed by your serum of choice, pressed gently into the skin, followed by your protection or cell renewal followed by your protection or cell renewal, or treatment oil.

Body Therapy

ΩOur body work recognises the mind, body and soul connection and great care is taken to restore balance between the three, understanding that total calmness and relaxation is obtained when gentle harmony is achieved. We acknowledge the work of our African ancestors, and draw upon many of their healing rituals to cleanse, heal and purify the body. Our touch works deeply into the core of tired, stiff muscles, while our essential oils help to calm and uplift the mind. We teach our therapists to work intuitively with the body, learning to recognise and connect with your energy, creating a very safe and calm space for you to feel truly restored.

Our naturally blended Marula oils and Ghana Shea are infused with healing African potato, Aloe and Rooibos, creating inspiring aromas and products that work wonders on skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Deeply hydrating and nourishing to the skin, our aromatic application conditions and repairs. Our essential oil blends start by reconnecting you with nature, and helping you to reconnect with yourself.

All treatments are the registered property of Africology and may only be used by Africology-affliated spas.

Ω   Shaman’s Healing Journey®

A gentle, kind and warm rose quartz crystal massage that releases pent up energy likely to cause muscular stress.  The body is gently stretched while heat is applied to unlock the muscles, followed by a rhythmic, relaxing massage. A beautiful way of balancing the body’s energy centres to create optimum health and well-being. Your treatment is based on the traditional healer’s approach to healing the body; a holistic, respectful and gentle treatment.

Ω   Inkomfi Renew®

Treatment Length: 45 minutes

The Inkomfi Renewal Scrub reveals a bright new you underneath. Traditionally before any ceremony takes place, there is a preparatory process. Our sloughing process gently exfoliates lifeless skin cells while nourishing the skin. This is followed by a warm compress and a nourishing, anti-oxidant body cocktail. The aromas of high-quality essential oils further transform a usually stressful mindset to one of enduring tranquillity, as a powerful memory is invoked each time you think of your Africology experience.

Ω   Soul of Africa Conditioning Massage®

Treatment Length: Body – 90 mins or Back – 45 mins

A ceremonial process using Africa’s miracle oil blended with Neroli to soften signs of ageing through its anti-stress action. Traditionally Marula was used in anointment ceremonies to bless and bring abundance. In Africa, Marula is also known to treat sun-damaged skin as it improves skin hydration and helps fight free radicals. The Rooibos extract blended into our oil is a special way of helping the skin to rejuvenate itself. This treatment starts with the application of warm, soothing mud to release negativity stored in the muscles: this is gently removed with a warm aromatic compress followed by the application of Marula oil in preparation for your intuitive body and scalp massage.

Ω   Shea Aromatheraputics®

Treatment Length: Body – 75 mins or Back – 45 mins

Easy Melting Shea from Ghana blended with  natural essential oils creates the most beautiful body experience. Shea, which is initially as hard as rock, once applied to the skin melts deeply into the upper layers of the dermis to hydrate, soothe and condition. A sensory selection of exotic jasmine, Neroli, geranium or black pepper and rosemary for a deep tissue treatment, or calming chamomile to relax. The treatment begins with the selection of your mood enhancing Shea and the cleansing of your energy field, followed by the comfort of a warm aromatic compress before the therapeutic massage begins. The treatment closes gently with balancing your energy, and sound therapy is used to rejuvenate the mind.

Ω   Intuitive Herbal Oil Massage®

Treatment Length: Body – 75 mins or Back – 45 mins

You can choose from a range of Africology aromatherapy-infused massage oils which are warmly applied and massaged deeply into the body. The massage works on tight muscles and lymph drainage, combating tension in stiff, aching bodies. This is combined with a warm compress to improve circulation and absorption of essential oils and finished with herbal pods to destress and balance. Choose from our range of relaxing, detox, muscle relaxing or energising blends.

Ω   Heated Herbal Stone Massage®

Treatment Length: Body – 75 mins or Back - 45 mins

This treatment uses nature’s volcanic basalt rock that retains heat and enables its sun-charged properties to penetrate deep into stressed muscles. Stones are placed on pressure points to soothe nerve endings and balance energy by releasing any emotional blockages. This comforting Africology massage allows the therapist to select the appropriate aromatheraputic Shea best suited to be in harmony with you and to nourish, protect and hydrate the skin.

Ω   Intonga Amasatchi (stick massage)®

Treatment Length: Body – 75 mins

Blessing the body and eliminating negativity was very much part of the healer’s ritual in treating ailments. In today’s world we know that the body holds memory of all emotional experiences. An inability to let go often expresses itself in the body as arthritis or a sluggish lymphatic system that can be blamed for low immunity. The healer saw this as negativity possessing the body. Intonga Amasatchi is a deep tissue and stress-relieving treatment. Skilful movements are performed with the hands and different sized wooden sticks are used to stretch tight muscles and ease toxic overload from daily stress. Symbolically the stick or staff represented wisdom and direction to the healer. Created from wood, the traditional healer knew that the energy of earth (symbolising growth and abundance) is a valuable tool, not only in grounding the individual, but also for its intrinsic ability to absorb and purify negativity, rechannelling energy flow.

Ω   Hypoxis Body Experience – anti-aging®

Treatment Length: Body – 2 hrs

Our body experience starts with an Africology body scrub that also acts as a purifying masque. This process deeply eliminates toxins, while exfoliating lifeless skin cells and assisting cell renewal, preparing the skin for Hypoxis. African potato’s essence is extracted using a natural process, and when combined with Marula oil, softens, soothes and improves skin hydration, while also fighting free radicals. Africology’s warm herbal blend relaxes you on application, while the background sounds of Africa ensure a special way to help the mind focus on the holistic experience. You may choose between a traditional foot ritual or deeply relaxing face massage, while the wrap’s herbal blend moisturises and tones the skin. Finally, there is the pressure point massage, with the skin serum that creates a natural barrier to hold in moisture, to complete the experience. The Palmitic Acid found in Marula oil creates a protective coating on the surface of the skin. Palmitic acid is fat-soluble, so it can easily be absorbed into the skin. Offering maximum protection against free radicals, it also helps the growth of fibroblasts, the cells that help produce collagen and elastin in the skin.

Ω   Rooibos & Lavender Clay Wrap®

Treatment Length: Body – 2 hrs

African women have for centuries captured the spirit of river mud for a more youthful and radiant complexion. This wonderfully therapeutic wrap contains deep-cleansing Kaolin and Bentonite for the absorption of excess oil and toxins from the skin which makes it ideal for the treatment of skin conditions such as eczema, rashes, sunburn, and swelling. Our special mix of plant oils and extracts helps to leave skin feeling smooth and refined, stimulating blood and lymphatic flow. The skin is prepared with our Africology Body Scrub, and completed with a massaged application of hydrating Lavender and Pine balm.

Ω   Topical Immune Boosting Body Mud®

Treatment Length: Body – 2 hrs

Once the body has been prepared with a skin exfoliation, this Africology vitamin and mineral cocktail promotes a healthy immune system, is applied as a mud wrap. It sets on the body to stimulate lymph glands, collagen production and toxin elimination; this is further enhanced with heat or steam to activate plant actives, allowing for better penetration into the skin. The mud is removed with warm water followed by a lymph massage.

Ω   African Detox Mud®

Treatment Length: Body – 2 hrs

We use an African plant combination used in a natural mud to help with circulation and lymph gland stimulation. It contains L-Carnitine and Caffeine which act as fat strippers and mobilisers to stimulate lipolysis. Rooibos tea extract and Aloe Vera have a soothing and calming effect. This invigorating wrap begins with stimulating and exfoliating, working on circulation and lymph before the warm wrap is applied and heated. This invigorating treatment is particularly good for bodies in need of a detox owing to acidic conditions, arthritis and oedema. Completes with a circulatory massage and energy balancing.

Ω   Coffee & Mint Body Wrap®

Treatment Length: Body – 2 hrs

Once the body has been prepared with our walnut and marula shell Exfoliator, our proven combination of coffee extract combined with Mint is applied as a mud wrap and sets on the body to stimulate lymph and blood flow together with toxin elimination. This wrap is particularly helpful in elimination water retention and cellulite reduction. It is highly recommended as part of a Lymph Draining Treatment. Suitable for pregnant women as well as clients with high blood pressure.

All treatments are the registered property of Africology and may only be used by Africology-affliated spas.

Hydrotherapy

Relax, detox or energise your body in the bath. Hydrotherapy, formerly called hydropathy, involves the use of water for soothing pains and treating diseases.

Hydrotherapy is used to treat musculoskeletal disorders such as arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, or spinal cord injuries and helps patients suffering from burns, spasticity, stroke or paralysis.

Its use has been recorded in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations. Egyptian royalty bathed with essential oils and flowers, while Romans had communal public baths for their citizens. Hippocrates prescribed bathing in spring water for sickness. A Dominican monk, Sebastian Kneipp, again revived it during the 19th century.
